Welcome!
After more than 40 years as a professional documenter of classical music and opera, at home and abroad, writing for national newspapers and specialist magazines, I am setting up on my own, to offer my personal take on live musical events, recordings and the workings of the music business, offering my weekly articles on a subscription basis via Substack.com.
Occasional features, profiles of prominent artists, and discussions of the “politics” of music, will be available free as samplers. I plan to assess the prospects of three young tenors – Benjamin Bernheim, Freddie De Tommaso and Jonathan Tetelman – vying to claim the crowns of the celebrated stars of the past with new albums for the big international labels, Deutsche Grammophon and Decca. This will be available to all who visit Operalogue.
My choice of live reviews will be a personal one, based on my long experience of performances at local, national and international level and I hope my subscribers will have sufficient faith in those choices—of course, they will encouraged to add their own comments and observations—to follow me on this new venture. There will be regular reviews of the most interesting disc releases, and occasional newsy nuggets that fall from the grapevine.
Thank you
Hugh
